Interview With Gene Liu( Reuter www.evotuners.com)
Personal Profile Gene Liu 27 Los Angeles, CA How long have you been racing? I been racing since the middle of 95. What got you into racing cars? I've always had a great fascination with the mechanics and operation of cars since my early childhood. This passion towards mechanics ultimately guided me to obtain my Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a main focus on Internal Combustion Engines. My growing interest in this area was the main driving force behind my involvement with racing and "tinkering" with my first ever muscle car, a Plymouth '72 Duster. MOPAR Baby!! What made you choose a BMW M3 to race? Why choose a M3 out of all the cars out there? I wouldn't really call it racing when I started. Import Racing was still in its infancy stage back then. My "racing†actually started out as being more of an interest, a need to satisfy my curiosity of how the car would perform on the track. What kind of motor are you running in your BMW M3 right now and how is it doing for you? I'm actually using the factory E36 3.0L motor and punched it out to 3.2L (which came factory on the 96+ M3's). It was more economical for me to do it this way. The motor is completely fortified with JE Pistons, Pauter 4130 Connecting Rods, a TEC II Engine Management System, and the heart of it all, an Active Autowerke Turbo System. What is the best time you ever ran in your car to date? To my surprise, this motor has truly surpassed all of my expectations. It turned out to be a real power monger, cranking out over 700hp. We were able to turn consistent 10 second 1/4 mile passes with a best of 138mph! I was impressed, considering this was a street driven car. Are we going to be seeing any new sponsors or setups for the 2001 season? I'm thinking about going just a bit wilder in 2001. Ok, maybe a lot wilder. Editor's Note: With that said, stay tuned for a feature on Gene Liu's, AGP Motorsport's sponsored Pro Mod BMW........ Could this be the first car into the coveted land of the 6's? Would you plan to build another car soon, if yes what kind of car is it? I don't think it's much of a secret anymore. I'm coming out with a full tube chassis, carbon fiber, twin turbo BMW that'll represent the latest in technology. With a high profile car like yours, there has to be people that you would like to thank? Oh geez, where do I start. There's been so many different team players who have helped out in some sense, whether is directly or indirectly. I think as a whole, everyone within this scene is helping each other out whether it's just exchanging information, tips and tricks, or providing actual wrenching help. I'm lucky enough to have the whole team of Active Autowerke in Miami, fulfill both of these roles. They are definitely a critical element in the success of this car. What do you do when you’re not working on cars or racing? How is your weekend life? Free time is always spent kicking back and relaxing. In other words, I sleep. If you had a choice of any model to drive your racecar, who would it be and why? Oprah Winfrey, because she is big and beautiful. Racing is all about going faster, what would you like to slow down? And why? I wouldn't slow a thing. I think it's remarkable to see how quickly the entire scene has grown….this mass infestation of raspy exhaust cans.
